Replacing Your Kitchen Counters

You have a few things you can do to easily update your kitchen for a small cost. You can go with a fresh coat of paint, but there are a few things you can do to be more dramatic. You can change your counter tops to get a major change. Don’t be scared this is actually fairly easy to do. A great start is to use graph paper and draw out your counter tops.

You will need to carefully record your measurements and draw out the counter shape. You may wish to purchase a laser ruler so that you can get an accurate measure of the counter. The counter should be measured along the wall side of the counter from the edge to the wall. This will give you an accurate representation of your counters measurements. A drawing will help you visualize the shape of your counter tops when you go do order them.

You will also have to account for where your sink sits.  You can do this by measuring from the center of the sink to the wall. By going from the center of the sink you should have a pretty good idea where your sink will sit in your new counter. You will also need to measure the dimentions of the hole that is left after you remove the sink also. This will provide you with the area you need to cut out from your new counter top.

All of the measurements can then be taken to your local big box hardware store. It is very common for big box stores to order in your counter top to the perfect dimentions. The bonus here is often times the hole for your sink can also be cut by them at this time also. If they are unable to cut the sink hole, don't worry you can do it yourself, that is why you took all of the measurements.

To cut your sink hole, get your measurements out and put masking take on your counter wher you sink will be. You will need a router and a bit that you can cut out the hole for the sink. Please remember that you need the masking tape in order to keep the laminate from spitting or cracking. Honestly at this point it is a matter of popping out your old counter tops and installing the new ones. The finishing touch on your new counter top is running a bead of caulk or silicone down the back of the counter top and the wall.  This helps to fill in any gaps that may be left.
